How to Set a Rookie Recruiter Up for Success

How to Set a Rookie Recruiter Up for Success Its your recruitment consultants first day as the newest hire in the office and youre left wondering how you are going to get them to from zero to hero as quickly as possible. Make sure you put time aside to sit down with your new consultant and break down what to expect from them each week. Make sure you are clear form the outset  from your side and explain to them how you expect these actions to develop their skills month on month. Beyond them making their first placement, there are a number of steps which you can take together, to ensure that they develop into the best recruiter they can be: Take the emphasis off a quick deal This is the best thing that happened to me as a new recruit I felt like there was so much pressure to do a first deal, by hook or by crook! As soon as the pressure was taken off me I focused my efforts onto really developing a business. I did this by implementing good practise I met candidates and clients, had good conversations with them which had purpose and properly mapped out a business with a solid list of target clients. Those that do deals quickly dont necessarily materialise into the best recruitment consultants. Those consultant which concentrate on a structured business development plan will, eventually yield consistency by building a solid business  correctly. Put in place smaller targets To encourage the above point, put in place smaller targets which can be reviewed daily/weekly. Start with simple tasks like composing a really good template for a follow up email, gradually build on the complexity of the targets. Good development points can include: Calls to relevant clients Commitment for future action Meeting candidates Meeting Clients Make sure that these are recognised as milestones and reward them for their effort. This will help  to build up their confidence (lets face it, many sales people are confidence players!) Take them along to events They can easily find networking events and hangs-outs in their area by scouring Google/LinkedIn and asking candidates in their network. This is a great way for them to meet and engage with relevant people in their space and they will quickly pick up the lingo as well as  warm leads/candidates which will materialise further down the line. Get them to present on their market This is a great way of making sure that the consultant has got to grips with the market which they are recruiting in I would always recommend candidates recruiting into targeted markets so they get to understand the space really well. This will ensure  that when they are in conversation with candidates they are easily able to speak about the job roles and work out how suitable a candidate will be. Setting up an informal presentation in which the consultant will present back to the manager/team will mean that the consultant will be required to put some real thought into their market, learning any market terms. The team can fire informal questions at them so that when they are in front of clients they will be fully prepared. Stage mock meetings Whether this is an office wide roll out for every new starter to make sure they are up to scratch or something you do in a one on one environment its great practise! Set them up with a scenario either by email or a follow up from a mock phone call. Make  sure you throw some realistic objections at them and create a score sheet. From here you can give the consultant some constructive feedback to help develop their skills! Get them to lead an office  project Whether its a Monday morning song playlist or organising an office wide sales day, its a great way to get a recruitment consultant brought into the company culture and settled into the company.  Some things you can try could include: Office music playlist Sales days Incentive role outs KPI boards Pair them with a buddy Ideally this will be a senior consultant or somebody that has done particularly well that they can sit next to. Make sure they catch up with their mentor at least daily (ideally after lunch/half way through the day) and get them to listen into particularly important phone calls.Having a hands-on mentor to speak to on a daily basis about their  queries will take some emphasis off the amount of time which you will need to invest into management and it will also help the more senior consultant to develop their skills. For a rookie recruiter to fully develop into the superstar you know they can be, its important to strike a balance between hand-holding and letting them sink or swim. Whatever you do, dont leave the new recruiter to their own devices, and have them suffer in silence try to remember what it was like on your first day you were probably nervous, just like they are! Be sure to create a bespoke development plan and framework for their first week, month, six months and so on, so you can  continue to track their progress to becoming a fully fledged consultant.

Female Success Stories in Sport

Female Success Stories in Sport There have been a number of recent female successes in the world of sport over the last 12 months. Some have won awards, trophies and competitions, while others have managed to compete against the men in their chosen sports. Books like  [amazon template=productasin=1555536719] show many women who are excelling in sports. We take a look at some of the female success stories over the last year, and discuss their achievements. Katie Walsh Katie Walsh has had a fantastic last 12 months and has really achieved in a profession that has traditionally been male-orientated. Ruby Walsh’s sister has lived in the shadow of her brother for many years but she has grown out of her shell in recent times. Recently, Katie was made Ladies Day ambassador for the Aintree Grand National meeting and was clearly ecstatic and very proud of her achievement. In addition, she also became only the third woman jockey to win the Irish Grand National this year while riding Thunder and Roses. She has always been a great jockey though, and finished third in the Grand National at Aintree on Seabass back in 2012. Unfortunately, her planned mount Broadway Buffalo failed to make the cut for this year’s race and she missed out on the big event. Reanne Evans Reanne Evans is the female world snooker champion and came within a whisker of qualifying for the main World Championship event at The Crucible this year. Evans has won the women’s title 10 times and put up an excellent fight, losing 10-8 to veteran Ken Doherty in the first qualifying round. Her achievements have shown that women can compete with the men, despite the legendary Steve Davis dismissing this last year as he claimed that ‘the male species have got a single-minded, obsessional type of brain that I don’t think many females have.’ 29-year-old Reanne almost reached the main draw for the World Championships and she is likely to try again next year as she searches for difficult challenges. Meanwhile, this year’s tournament is underway and you can find snooker news and odds here and if youre thinking to compete yourself,  Onlysportsgear.com is a good place to find your gear. Jo Pavey At 40 years old, Jo Pavey became the oldest woman ever to claim gold at the European Championships. The mother of two won the 10,000 metres race at Zurich last August and ensured that Team GB got off to the best possible start at the meeting. The fact that Pavey is 40 years old is impressive enough, but she only gave birth 11 months prior to the race â€" and how she found the time to raise a child while still training and competing at such a high level shocked everybody. Her achievement will forever be recognised as one of the greatest moments in British athletics history.

Video Games Building a Brand Outside of the Basement - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Video Games Building a Brand Outside of the Basement - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Todays post is written by T.K. Brown. An industry once associated with introverts and basement dwellers has finally ascended from the underground and into the light of mainstream media.     For outsiders, this may have come as a surprise, but for those who are close to the industry, the transition was inevitable.   Gone are the days of dimly lit arcades, low budget titles and disconnected consumers.   Today’s video game market highlights global connectivity and budgets that rival the film industry’s most profitable franchises.   The industry that gave the world a mushroom eating Italian plumber is now grossing more revenue than all other media outlets and extending it’s demographic with each passing year.   It is truly the golden age of video games and like it or not we are all along for the ride. A recent Q1 2011 report by the NPD Group (formally the National Purchase Diary) reveals U.S. consumers spent a total of $5.9 billion towards the video game industry during the first quarter.     This figure includes all software and hardware purchases made under the video game industry umbrella.   Although impressive, this is only one ripple in the entertainment revenue pond.   The largest wave came back in 2005 when video game revenue surpassed the movie industry domestically.   The progress continued in 2007 and 2008 when video games surpassed the music industry and global film sales numbers respectively.   According to CNBC, the video game industry recorded sales of $18.58 billion in fiscal year 2010.     The message is clear.   Video games are big money and a reflection of incredible consumer interest. The industry as a whole has the flexibility to reach a varied and constantly changing demographic.     This has allowed companies to not only continually increase revenues, but also diversify the sales channels they are using to reach consumers.   Mobile gaming has put a console in the hand of anyone with a smart phone or tablet.   Meanwhile, social gaming through networking sites like Facebook have connected individuals around the world over a common interest such as digital farming.   As a result, research firms like Ovum are predicting digital game revenue to reach $24 billion in 2011.   Whether the individual is a child learning basic mathematics on the Nintendo Wii or a business executive looking to kill some time on the train ride home with some Angry Birds, it appears now that everyone is a gamer, even if they don’t play video games in the traditional sense. So what is the result of all this?   How can companies market to such a diverse and ever changing consumer base?   Well, the answer is not yet clear, but the video game industry is taking steps to connect consumers to their brands and make those consumers even more engaged.   While most digital and social game downloads are “word of mouth” sales, the AAA titles, which can be most closely compared to Hollywood’s blockbuster films, are now being advertised and marketed in a similar fashion.   The recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 release saw a slew of marketing up to and beyond its release.   This is nothing new for the current generation of consoles.   However, games like COD: MW3 are making the transition from simply marketing the game itself to a more brand oriented approach.   This commercial spot not only highlights the Call of Duty brand, but it also features Jonah Hill and Sam Worthington, two well-known ‘A-List’ Hollywood actors.   By associating these two actors with the Call of Duty brand, Activision connects the consumer to actual human beings, something more recognizable and relatable. The key to a successful game has been and always will be a well-made product.   However, the ability to connect consumers to the product is something we are only seeing the early stages of. By hiring popular and recognizable actors to represent a video game, a sense of credibility is gained.   Actors and actresses are already starting to lend their likeness and voice talents to in game characters and it appears the next step will be to have them promote the games brand to consumers through advertising campaigns like the one for Call of Duty.   It won’t be long until A-list actors and actresses are working on video games like they would the latest Pixar movie.   The industry is demanding that it be taken seriously and with the kind of avenues they have to support that demand, people have no choice but to listen. The push to make the video game industry and the brands that comprise it visible to the general public has never been stronger.   Online, television and magazine marketing are just a few of the avenues companies are taking to make people aware that video games are, in fact, out of the basement and are here to stay.   So, the next time you sling shot an angry bird, explore renaissance Italy with a world famous assassin or lead your military squad to victory on the streets of Manhattan, take a second and realize you are not alone in your parents basement.   You are with the rest of the world:  A world at play. Author: T.K. Brown is a video game industry professional. His research focuses on the integration between video games and popular culture.

The 5 Languages of Nice - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

The 5 Languages of Nice - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career As my creative partner @FamousAlice says, “competent and nice beats genius and difficult” when it comes to hiring, promoting and collaborating with team members â€" or selecting and working with vendors and consultants. Competence is broadly understood as being good at what you do; but do not dismiss what it takes to be good â€" the education, experience, failure, success and of course opportunity. You might feel heartened to know that getting to the top rarely demands you to be the Wily E. Coyote, the super genius of your generation. Actually, unless you have the idea and lone-wolf determination to launch the next Apple or you’re floating in pirate-free waters on a yacht as an heir to a Madoff-proof fortune, nice is the significantly larger factor when it comes to achieving success for most of us. The great advantage of being nice â€" or learning to be nice Nice is not the natural state for many, many people. You know it and so do I.   I interact with tens of thousands of people from speaking and working in branding and communications. I interact with professionals, business owners, students, young managers, mid-career changers, and the gamut of people who work from all over the world. About 20% of these people are nice. Another 25% can pretend for a while. The other half are acting irritated, frustrated, angry, rude, bored, and certainly self-centered.   A fraction of those are just plain nasty. This makes your life as a nice person fantastic when it comes to the odds of people wanting to help you, hire you and send the best work your way. Learn the language of nice So, if you are looking to get ahead or get into your next great gig, learn the five languages of nice. Yes, it is that easy.   Trustworthiness. For example, learn to keep a secret. In fact, keep all of them. Be a vault. There’s no gain in sharing anything that someone tells you in confidence. Oh â€" and when you say yes, mean yes. And, do it. Generosity. Keep your eyes open for a job that someone else might do well â€" and transfer the information to them. Be selfish about your karma. Kindness. Next time, offer to go get a sandwich for a co-worker who’s going to miss lunch to make a deadline.   Bring back packets of mayo AND mustard. Compassion. For instance, sympathize with your boss. Act like you understand what it’s like to have all that pressure â€" and everything else that’s going on in his or her life. Empathy. Feel the joy when your friend gets good news. Let tears of happiness well up in you when you see a soldier get that first kiss on home soil. Being nice takes work If you know my work, you know I say: “There is no magic threshold.” You can’t be nasty, indifferent, lazy, untruthful and unkind in your personal life and somehow be a nice person when you cross the threshold at the office door, meet a recruiter or prospect or write an email. Paul Zak, cited by the New York Times as a leading authority in the emerging field of neuroeconomics, has been researching neuro-chemicals. There could be a possibility that genetics can cause people to be not-so-nice and based on these findings, what profession they are most suited for can be determined. Apparently, if you can’t speak the languages of nice: you can always be a Wall Street trader.   That counts you out of a whole lot of other opportunities â€" but at least you know where you belong. Productive things you can do with a hangover - Debut

Productive things you can do with a hangover - Debut Ow. Thats probably as far as your thoughts usually go after a heavy night out.  We wouldnt blame you if you wanted to hide in a darkened room to sleep your hangover off, but lifes way too short for that. Weve got 13 productive things you can do with a hangover to challenge yourself with right here. So stock up on Lucozade, pop some Ibuprofen, and get stuck into these. 1. Get your protein intake for the day You know, for dem gainz. In all seriousness, get yourself a bacon butty stat, because even if the whole grease lining your stomach thing may be a myth, bacon sandwiches are definitely good for the hungover soul. 2. Take a technology break and practice mindfulness We love apps like Headspace, for example. They get you in the zone for calming, soothing activities like meditation in no time. 3. Sort out your wardrobe Or do a similarly repetitive, monotonous task. You dont want to be doing anything too strenuous for your poor alcohol-affected brain, so something a little bit dreary would be the perfect productive thing to do. 4. Take stock of your kitchen and make a note of missing essentials You probably havent looked into the back of your kitchen cupboard in a while, or if youve just moved into halls, you probably dont even have the essentials (sugar, salt, pepper, etc.) Make a shopping list and stock up on the important stuff. 5. Prep your meals like a boss If youve got a whole day of being inside, you might as well make a mammoth chili to freeze and defrost during the week. Trust us, future you will definitely be thanking past you when you come back to the house starving after lectures. 6. Fuel your hangover rage into a creative task We dont know about you, but hangovers make us  so. damn. mad. Channel your frustration into writing a poem, or painting messily on a canvas. Itll be cathartic, promise. 7. Call your parents, because (perhaps rightly) theyre probably worried about you Therell probably be no point in hiding your hangover, so dont expect any sympathy. But theres nothing nicer than catching up with family when youre feeling a little bit fragile. 8. Do some light, and we mean light exercise Straining yourself too much when youre not at 100% is probably not the best idea. But a quick jog or some yoga would be the perfect way to detox all of the nasty stuff out. 9. Write down your weekly to-do list There is no better feeling than the feeling of accomplishment, especially with that ol hangover buzzing in your ear. Sort your life out, write it all down, and youll feel like youve got it all together. 10. Try a new hangover cure I mean, why not? If it isnt going away, try one you may never have tried before. We recommend Bloody Marys if youre feeling especially grown up. 11. Attempt to get to inbox zero Emails pile up, making that red badge next to your inbox look more alarming by the day. Nows the perfect time to delete spam, unsubscribe from newsletters you dont read, and finally reply to that one email youve been ignoring. 12. If you cant stand the thought of reading, download some informative podcasts Podcasts are totally the new books. Our favourite picks are Reply All, Radiolab and Invisibilia for some serious learnin. 13. Spend quality time with an equally hungover mate doing something outdoors Sunshine = Vitamin D, which is excellent for hangovers. Also, if youre going through the worst hangover of your life, its much better doing it with someone in an equally dire state. Were all in this together, after all. New website just for Philly area job seekers is launched

New website just for Philly area job seekers is launched 0 Flares 0 Flares Philadelphia area resident, James Oley has decided to make things easier for Philadelphia job seekers.  Oley came up with an idea for an easy to use, Philadelphia area ONLY job search engine.  With those ideas in mind, Oley launched  www.phillyjobfest.com sometime early in July. Surely it will take some time for phillyjobfest to spread around the area, but both job seekers and employers should keep one, or both eyes on the search engine.  For employers, phillyjobfest most likely provides a somewhat lower cost to post job advertisements as compared to the larger sites like Careerbuilder and Monster.  For job seekers, until this search engine catches fire, youll be one of the few searching for employment on the new website.

What to Know Before Writing Your Resume

What to Know Before Writing Your ResumeBurdick has been around for quite some time, and he has many great tips for what to know before writing your resume. While I have always had great results with Burdick's products, I wanted to take a moment to give you a little perspective on him. He is one of the top freelance writers in the business, and he is known for having a unique writing style.I have used his products and methods and I have to say that they are the best for getting your job interview ideas out there and getting those interviews back in the system. Burdick also has a fantastic reputation as an interviewer and if you want to learn what to know before writing your resume, you should definitely check out his materials. In the next section I am going to discuss the following: Writing The Headline, Building Your Cover Letter, Personal Essay, and The Brief. All three of these items are essential for you to know before writing your resume. Just remember that the book covers all of the bases and offers you many ways to enhance your resume to get that extra edge you need. The first item is a short introduction. What I mean by this is you can change your resume from boring to engaging, or you can add something to the resume that will catch the eye of a hiring manager. The second step is building the cover letter. The book gives a few different approaches, but ultimately it is important to emphasize your expertise and why they should hire you.The third step is extremely important elements to know before writing your resume. Most resumes are looked at only as a cover letter, and I would not recommend getting too involved in your resume. If you include your whole background, people will get confused and give you their resume instead. Finally, Burdick takes you through a short chapter that has tons of sample resumes and cover letters. Burdick even offers you the ability to download all of these sample materials, so if you like one of them, you can easily use it as a template for your own resume. This is a huge plus for you, because that resume will not be your last resume. If you have always felt intimidated by what to know before writing your resume or feel like you need more information about how to improve your resume, you should really look into Burdick's materials. They offer a great way to get started and learn what to know before writing your resume.
